South Korean startup Mathpresso, the operator of the AI-based learning platform Qanda, has successfully secured KRW 10 billion in investment from KT and established a strategic partnership.

Under this collaboration, Mathpresso intends to leverage its data and AI expertise in conjunction with KT’s robust infrastructure and proficiency in foundation model technology. This synergy aims to expedite the development of lightweight Large Language Models (LLMs) customized for the education sector.

Mathpresso is confident in its competitive edge in crafting LLM models tailored for educational applications. In education, accuracy is paramount, and the challenge lies in ensuring that information provided is precise. While GPT-4 may sometimes generate inaccurate responses, akin to hallucinations, Mathpresso’s expertise in education-specific data will be instrumental.

They plan to create cost-effective and precise education-specialized LLM models, leveraging their proprietary technologies. These include learning data related to educational levels, context, and interactions gathered through 10 million daily problem searches, along with OCR technology and mathematical calculation algorithms that proficiently recognize shapes, graphs, and handwriting.

The company intends to harness these LLM models to enhance their AI tutors, designed as AI assistant teachers, and integrate them into various education solutions to establish personalized learning environments. Recently, they launched the beta version of “Poly,” a generative AI problem-solving tutor that combines OCR technology and LLM technology.

Additionally, Mathpresso plans to enter the US market by year-end, targeting the expansion of the AI tutor market. They aim to secure user engagement in the United States, boasting the largest private education market in the English-speaking world. This strategy will allow them to accumulate valuable English-language data for model training, enhancing model accuracy.

Mathpresso CEO Lee Yong-jae expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to be one step closer to realizing our vision of creating a world-class AI tutor through this strategic partnership and investment. We are committed to ongoing innovation, ensuring that students worldwide, not just in Asia, can access personalized education through Qanda.”

In the past, Mathpresso has successfully raised a total of KRW 153 billion in investment from prominent domestic and international investors, including Google, SoftBank Ventures, Legend Capital, and Mirae Asset Venture Investment.
