The council serves as a platform for communication among the fabless industry, foundries, and MSS officials to enhance South Korea’s fabless industry and system semiconductor sector competitiveness. Established in 2022, it addresses challenges faced by small and medium-sized fabless companies, develops cooperation plans, and shares growth outcomes.

Professor Choi Gi-Chang presented the latest system semiconductor industry trends and issues. Discussions included the 2024 Fabless Challenge implementation plan and KFIA’s policy proposals for fostering fabless startups.

MSS also announced the “2024 Fabless Challenge,” a program collaborating with Korean foundries to support promising fabless startups by covering MPW costs and facilitating new product production. Previously, only Samsung Electronics Foundry participated, but in 2024, all Korean foundries, including DB HiTek and SK keyfoundry, joined.

Promising fabless startups established within the last ten years and interested in using the MPW process provided by three Korean foundries are invited to apply. Five startups will be selected based on evaluations and presentations, receiving financial support ranging from KRW 100 million to KRW 200 million per company.

Director General CHO Gyeong-won emphasized MSS’s commitment to supporting fabless companies amidst industry challenges and enhancing their global competitiveness through strategic initiatives and partnerships.
