Korean aquatech startup ShunyTech has secured investment from the ‘Yuhan-Kimberly Green Impact Fund‘ managed by MYSC. ShunyTech plans to leverage this investment to establish a dominant position in the seaweed industry and aquaculture equipment sector. The company intends to further enhance its ongoing development of an ‘eco-friendly cultivation film for seaweed seed farming.’

Seaweed seed farming is a critical industry that determines the success or failure of seaweed aquaculture. However, it has received less attention compared to seaweed farming, leading to the continued use of outdated methods. The current oyster shell cultivation method has numerous disadvantages, including low efficiency in seaweed seed cultivation, high labor costs, transportation expenses, and environmental issues. Despite these drawbacks, it remains in use due to a lack of alternatives.

ShunyTech has developed the ‘eco-friendly cultivation film for seaweed seed farming’ to address the significant issues associated with oyster shells and improve the efficiency of seaweed seed farming. This new film is expected to significantly reduce harmful substances and carbon emissions produced during the incineration of used oyster shells, greatly contributing to the reduction of marine waste and carbon footprint. Furthermore, it will naturally resolve the unstable supply issue of oyster shells, which are entirely imported from China, and address the quality problems of seaweed seeds caused by the irregular shapes of oyster shells. This is expected to help alleviate conflicts between seaweed seed producers and seaweed farmers.

Seungho Jeong, CEO of ShunyTech, expressed his aspirations, stating, “With this investment, we will further enhance the quality of our eco-friendly cultivation film currently under development and soon expand its application to other seaweed species such as wakame and hijiki. We aim to serve as a bridge connecting high-efficiency eco-friendly technologies to the aquaculture industry.”

Previously, ShunyTech had also attracted investment from Kingsley Ventures, a management company of the Korea Venture Investment Corp(KVIC, fund of funds), and theJeonnam Creative Economy Innovation Center.
