Leveraging an AI question recommendation algorithm, MockingBird, a South Korean startup, has attracted seed funding for its service that offers customized mock exams in preparation for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). This investment round included participation from Kaist Venture Investment Holdings, Korea Investment Accelerator, and Banks Foundation for Young Entrepreneurs (d·camp). MockingBird intends to use this investment to expand its CSAT content production and to hire staff for further research into its question recommendation algorithm.

MockingBird is a startup committed to reducing the financial and temporal inefficiencies associated with CSAT preparation, operating under the slogan, “Achieve the fastest CSAT score improvement with AI.” It currently provides personalized mock exams by applying an AI question recommendation algorithm that adapts to each student’s learning data. The service offers unlimited access to past exam questions for free and also provides additional proprietary content created by expert question developers.

The team at MockingBird includes individuals who have previously worked at well-known South Korean private education firms such as Megastudy, SidaeInjae, and Kangnam DSHW, or have been awarded in question creation competitions.

Since its launch in June 2023, MockingBird has exceeded 10,000 registered users and demonstrated a paid conversion rate significantly higher than that of similar services. The company has successfully minimized the discrepancy between scores on MockingBird mock exams and actual CSAT scores to a range of 2-3 points. As a result, MockingBird is currently exploring partnerships for technology and content with several large tutoring centers and publishers.

Joo Yeon-woo, an evaluator at Korea Investment Accelerator, commented, “Including CEO Baek Seung-woo, who has experience publishing a CSAT past question analysis book, MockingBird is a team capable of producing high-quality content independently and possesses robust execution skills. We anticipate rapid growth as it addresses the private education market’s accessibility issues with its content and technology.”

MockingBird’s CEO, Baek Seung-woo, stated, “Beyond offering quality CSAT content, we aim to serve as an efficient study aid for the CSAT through personalized learning enabled by AI.”
