Record Achievement: 116 Korean Startups Win at CES 2024 Innovation Awards
Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea announced that from January 9th to 12th(local time), at the ‘CES(Consumer Electronics Show) 2024’ held in Las Vegas, USA, 116 domestic venture and startup companies won the CES Innovation Awards, marking a record achievement.The number of winning companies may increase following further announcements from the CES organizers(CTA).
The CES Innovation Awards, granted by the Consumer Technology Association(CTA) of the USA, recognize world-leading innovative technologies and products, referred to as “the highest honor at CES.”
This year, the CES Innovation Awards selected a total of 313 winning companies and 379 products across 28 categories, including Artificial Intelligence(AI), Digital Health, Smart Cities, and Robotics.
Among them, Korean companies accounted for 134(42.8%) and 158(41.6%) products, with small and medium-sized ventures comprising 121 companies or 90% of the total.
In particular, 116 companies, representing 86.6% of the Korean winners, are venture and startup companies, with startups within seven years of establishment also winning 97 awards(72.4%), marking a record number. Of the 116 venture and startup companies that won Innovation Awards, 91 companies(78.4%) have participated in startup support programs like TIPS and commercialization support offered by The Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea.
The ‘Best of Innovation’ award, given to companies with the most innovative technology and products in each exhibition category, was won by 27 companies worldwide. Among the Korean winners(8 companies), 7 are venture and startup companies(MIDBAR, Studiolab, Toptable, ZKRYPTO, ONECOM, LORDSYSTEM, Mand.ro).
Notably, ZYKRIPTO won the Best of Innovation in the Cybersecurity & Personal Privacy category for the second consecutive year with its blockchain-based offline voting station(zkVoting poll station) that ensures secret voting and verification. It has successfully scaled up through various stages of startup support programs offered by The Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea, including the startup packages for 2020, 2021, and 2022.
The Minister Oh Young-ju stated, “The continuous good performance of our startup companies at CES, especially the unprecedented achievements at CES 2024, signifies the result of innovative efforts by the companies along with government support. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea will actively support domestic startup companies to demonstrate their excellent technological prowess and innovative capacity to the world through CES and to create new business opportunities abroad.”
