SILI ENERGY, a Korean startup commercializing next-generation silicon and lithium anode materials to extend the range of electric vehicles and drones, has secured seed funding from Seoul Techno Holdings.. SILI ENERGY is focused on upstream and downstream industries, specifically electric vehicles and military drones, as well as domestic production of raw materials. The startup is commercializing next-generation anode materials such as silicon, lithium, and solid-state battery components.

Although silicon is globally recognized as a promising next-generation anode material, it has a technical challenge due to expansion during charging and discharging, which affects long-term capacity retention. SILI ENERGY is addressing this issue by commercializing silicon composites through its unique production and structural technology.

Lithium metal electrodes face a similar challenge with lithium dendrites, caused by uneven behavior of lithium ions. SILI ENERGY is commercializing structured lithium metal electrodes and lithium powder that help suppress lithium dendrites, while also offering large-area, thin-sheeted lithium metal electrodes. These structured silicon composites and lithium electrodes are also suitable for use in solid-state batteries.

The company received the Minister of Science and ICT Award and, in 2023, completed the Pre-Startup Package at Seoul National University Siheung Campus, overseen by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. SILI ENERGY is also involved in a government project under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy to recycle lithium from used secondary batteries.

Jeong Kyung-jin, CEO of SILI ENERGY,  said, “We aim to address key issues for electric vehicles, such as range and charging speed, while improving safety through silicon and lithium materials designed for solid-state batteries.” He also noted, “Given the current market pressures arising from China’s resource weaponization and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, we aim to provide a differentiated technology that helps stabilize Korea’s secondary battery industry supply chain.”

A representative from Seoul Techno Holdings Inc. added, “SILI ENERGY, a team nurtured through the Pre-Startup Package at Seoul National University Siheung Campus, possesses next-generation anode technology utilizing silicon to enhance battery performance. Although the battery material market is highly competitive, there’s a strong demand for innovation. SILI ENERGY’s goal to advance silicon anode technology and develop solid-state battery technology through lithium anode solutions leads us to believe that this investment will contribute to the growth of Korea’s battery material industry.”
